Will an island fit in my kitchen?
Type your room size and where the fitted units go. The planner works out the biggest island that leaves a comfortable walkway all round, how many stools it seats and what to change if it does not fit.

Type your room size above.
Seen from above, in proportion. Green: fitted units. Peach: island, paler where the worktop overhangs. Circles: stools. Green pills: walkway widths in mm.
Island length = room length − walkway at each end Island depth = room width − fitted unit depth − walkway each side Stools = island length ÷ 600 mm, rounded down
With an L or U layout the units on the side walls are taken off the length too. If the hob or sink is in the island, the walkway on the cooking side goes up to 1200 mm so a second person can pass behind the cook safely. The planner never makes the island deeper than 1200 mm or longer than 3000 mm, because beyond that you cannot reach the middle of the worktop and one piece of stone becomes hard to get into the house.
| Room | Island | Seats | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3600 × 3400 | 1600 × 800 | No stools | Prep island only; too shallow for knee space |
| 3800 × 3600 | 1800 × 1000 | 3 stools | Compact but comfortable |
| 4200 × 3600 | 2200 × 1000 | 3 stools | Comfortable |
| 4800 × 3900 | 2800 × 1200 | 4 stools | Generous |
| 3600 × 2900 | none | - | Choose a peninsula or table |
